Ensure you are getting the most out of your fitness routine by working with the HVF Registered Dietitian and become a lean, fat burning machine.

Is there a difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

The simple answer is, YES, there is a difference between a Registered Dietitian (RD) and a Nutritionist.

Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, so the level of training and knowledge is not ensured. Some RDs choose to call themselves nutritionists, but a nutritionist cannot legally refer to themselves as an RD without the appropriate credentials.

An RD is considered to be the food and nutrition expert and is registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. There are several criteria required to earn this credential, they include:

1. Completion of a bachelor’s degree (at minimum) and approved coursework.

2. Completion of supervised practice program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education.

3. Passing a national exam by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

4. Maintaining registration through continuing professional educational requirements.
If you would like more information, go to the American Dietetic Association website at www.eatright.org or contact the Hudson Valley Fitness Dietitian today.

5 Reasons to See a Registered Dietitian

(taken from the ADA’s Top 10 List)

1. You want to eat smarter to stay fit. A registered dietitian can help you sort through nutrition misinformation you may read or hear; learn how to read labels at the supermarket; discover that healthy cooking is inexpensive; learn how to eat out without ruining your eating plan and how to resist workplace temptations.

2. You want to improve sport performance. A registered dietitian can help you set goals, learn how to fuel your body for performance, reduce risk of illness and injury, and promote recovery from intense training and competition.

3. You need or want to gain or lose weight. A registered dietitian can suggest additional calorie sources for healthy weight gain or a healthy reduced-calorie eating plan- plus regular physical activity- for weight loss while still eating your favorite foods.

4. You have diabetes, cardiovascular problems, or high blood pressure. Nutrition can help manage diabetes, decrease cholesterol levels, and lower blood pressure. Modify eating behaviors to slow chronic disease progression without slowing your life down. A registered dietitian can be an integral part of your healthcare team.

5. Your child or teenager has issues with food and eating healthfully. A registered dietitian can assist with teaching a child or teenager how to make healthier food choices and manage weight. College students can also benefit from learning how to: prevent the “Freshman 15” weight gain, eat smart in the cafeteria, and pick healthy, satisfying food choices on a lean budget.
